Dermatologist's Choice

Now that summer has arrived, sunscreen is on everybody’s mind. Whether you’re heading to the beach for the weekend or participating in your regular outdoor activities, sun protection should be a part of your everyday routine. However, when it comes to choosing a sunscreen, there are countless options, and finding a sunscreen that suits your needs can seem a little overwhelming. That’s why it’s always best to opt for a brand recommended by those who know skin best: Dermatologists.

What dermatologists look for in a sunscreen

Dermatologists know their stuff when it comes to skin. From being free from irritating ingredients to hydrating your skin, when recommending a sunscreen, there is much more than just sun protection factor (SPF) involved. Here are several factors that your dermatologist will take into account when recommending a sunscreen:

1. Sensitive Skin

When it comes to sunscreen, it’s not only what we put in, but what’s left out, that counts. For a sunscreen to be suitable for sensitive skin, there are a few ingredients that should be avoided. Dermatologists will look for a sunscreen that’s free from oil, alcohol, fragrance, colorants, parabens, PABA, and Oxybenzone. They’ll also often recommend a sunscreen that’s preservative-free, hypo-allergenic and non-comedogenic.

If you suffer from a skin condition read our Blog on Sensitive Skin.

2. High SPF, broad spectrum sunscreen

SPF, or ‘sun protection factor’ relates to the level of protection that a sunscreen provides against UVB rays – the ones which cause sunburn, skin cancer and melanoma. So, of course, the level of SPF that your sunscreen offers is incredibly important. A broad spectrum sunscreen, on the other hand, protects against both UVB and UVA rays, and is important for protecting against skin damage, premature ageing.

Dermatologists will recommend a broad-spectrum sunscreen with a high SPF, such as SPF 30 or above. SPF 30 sunscreen will block around 97% of UVB rays, whilst SPF 50 will protect against up to 98% of UVB rays.

3. Post-procedure product

Sunscreen is particularly important for those who’ve recently undergone a cosmetic procedure or surgery. In fact, leading dermatologist, David Bank, believes that the single most important factor for the healing of scars is sunscreen.

Not only is scarred tissue more susceptible to sun damage and discolouration, UV exposure can also cause inflammation which disrupts the healing process and inhibits the formation of new collagen in the skin.

Dermatologists will therefore recommend a high-SPF sunscreen which is kind to sensitive skin, which will also sooth and help to heal the skin, help to prevent infection, and prevent post-inflammatory pigmentation.

4. Recommendations from the Australasian College of Dermatologists

Finally, your dermatologist will recommend a sunscreen that follows the guidelines including:

  • Broad-spectrum protection (protection against both UVA and UVB rays)
  • SPF 30 or above
  • Water and sweat resistant

New advice published in the Australian and New Zealand Journal of Public Health suggests that sunscreen should be used every day - particularly when the maximum UV level is forecast to be three or higher (on most summer days in Australia, the UV index is between 12 and 14) - regardless of the activities you’ve got planned.

As there is such clear evidence for the benefits of daily sunscreen use, skin cancer experts hope to make wearing sunscreen as much a part of our daily routine as brushing our teeth.
