FOR UNDER & OVER MAKE-UP
So, you’re wearing sunscreen on your body when you head outdoors, but you’ve been avoiding using it on your face for decades? Like most people, the thought of wearing sunscreen underneath your make-up is unthinkable. It’s greasy, it cakes, it affects the tone of your foundation, and your make-up has enough of its own sun protection, right? Wrong!
Modern sunscreens are much more advanced than their older counterparts. These days, it is possible to find a sunscreen which not only gives you strong sun protection but sits perfectly under your make-up. Read on to find out more.
MAKE-UP IS NOT ADEQUATE SUN PROTECTION
Sure, your foundation or mineral powder might boast an SPF 15 rating. You might even feel as though your face is less tanned than your body because of your make-up – which means it’s working, right?
The truth is, very few make-up products offer adequate sun protection, as New York City-based dermatologist Bruce Katz told Sarai Thompson of Makeup.com:
“Don’t rely on makeup for the best source of SPF as it’s notoriously unreliable in terms of the level of protection. Plus, makeup isn’t always applied evenly and comes off easily — thus, decreasing optimal coverage. You want to wear sunscreen underneath your foundation and it actually provides a better base for your makeup application.”
We don’t need to tell you that sun damage is the number one cause of skin damage, premature aging and fine lines. But are you aware of just how much damage the sun can do to your skin even when wearing make-up? Both UVA and UVB rays can penetrate your make-up and cause irreparable damage. Now’s the time to start wearing a sunscreen on your face, even when you’re planning on wearing make-up.
NOT ALL SUNSCREENS ARE CREATED EQUAL
Many people who wear make-up have avoided using sunscreen for decades because of the oily, pore-clogging, make-up caking effects of traditional sunscreens. In fact, there are still many sunscreens on the market today that aren’t even suitable for wearing on the face, let alone under make-up.
There is good reason to be picky about what you put on your face, as non-cosmeceutical grade make-ups and sunscreens can cause breakouts and irritation, as well as caking and looking unnatural. When choosing a sunscreen to wear beneath or over the top of your make-up, it’s important to know that it’s up to the task. It should be non-comedogenic, non-toxic, and of cosmeceutical grade.
Note: What is cosmeceutical-grade skincare?
Cosmeceutical products have both cosmetic and therapeutic properties. This means they’re not only great for cosmetic use (such as make-up) but are beneficial to the skin.
The best sunscreen for wearing with make-up
When choosing a sunscreen to wear under or over your make-up, you should look for several key properties, including:
- Doesn’t affect make-up finish
- Can be used under or over the make-up
- Tint-free for all skin tones
- Non-comedogenic formula (meaning it won’t block pores)
- Hypoallergenic formula which is less likely to cause issues for sensitive skin
- Fragrance-free formula for those with sensitive skin
- Dries quickly to a matte, silky finish
- Non-oily formula
- Alcohol-free, paraben-free and oxybenzone-free
- Lightweight feel
- Easy to apply

How to apply sunscreen under or over your make-up
As your sunscreen is literally a barrier from the sun’s harmful UV rays and works best when applied directly to the skin, you should apply your sunscreen before you apply any other products for the day. This means putting it on before your moisturisers and your make-up. Here are your step-by-step instructions for getting the most out of your sunscreen:
- After cleansing your skin, apply a generous layer of KINeSYS sunscreen to the skin by spraying onto your hands and patting gently over the face and neck
- Blend in thoroughly and then give it a few minutes to set
- Apply your moisturiser as normal and allow it to dry (as KINeSYS sunscreens are naturally nourishing, you might find that you don’t need to wear a moisturiser)
- Apply your foundation and/or mineral makeup powder over the top, for a smooth, long-lasting finish
Reapply sunscreen over make-up
If you’re spending time outdoors, reapply every 2 hours. If you are sweating, be sure to reapply every 80 minutes.
There is no need to wipe off your makeup. Simply apply KINeSYS Spray Sunscreen over your makeup. Remember to spray into your hands and swipe over your face to ensure even coverage.
The perfect travel-size bottle
Another reason that many people avoid using sunscreen when wearing makeup – especially when it comes to reapplying – is that it can be difficult to carry around a sunscreen tub or bottle during the day.
Luckily, KINeSYS sunscreens come in a handy, 30ml travel size; perfect for everyday use when out and about. It fits easily into a handbag, gym bag, small backpack, or picnic baskets. So, no matter what you’re getting up to each day, you’ll never be without your sun protection.
